Fight bogus CVs – the importance of checking qualifications
Lying about qualifications on a CV or an application form is fraud, pure and simple.
In 2014, 63%of all the confirmed employment frauds reported to CIFAS involved people lying about their education, former employment or qualifications.
With the news that such fraud is so prevalent, businesses need to protect themselves, because the consequences of employing somebody who has lied can be disastrous.
It almost goes without saying, but in medicine having an employee who isn’t sufficiently qualified is very dangerous and could put people’s lives at risk.
There’s also trust issues – if they’ve lied about their qualifications, what else could they lie about?
Qualifications are an indicator of ability, so there’s underperformance to consider. Then there’s the cost of re-starting the recruitment process once the lie has been discovered.
That’s before we even get to the threat to reputation, possible negative media stories, the impact on clients, suppliers, investors and the company’s worldwide standing..
Yahoo Chief Executive Scott Thompson didn’t have the computer science degree he claimed – he resigned, and four members of the board resigned too as they had approved his hire.
This case also highlights the risk of bogus CVs to people working in HR departments and the ultimate decision makers. Other examples include Radioshack boss David Edmondson, who claimed to have two degrees in psychology and theology, which he did not possess. He left the company in 2006. Marilee Jones, the former dean of admissions at MIT, claimed to have three University qualifications, two degrees and a doctorate – but she didn’t. It took 28 years for her lies to be discovered, but when they were she resigned.
That’s highlighted the risks of bogus CVs, but manually checking qualifications is an onerous, time consuming task.
